The cool bastion of cafe counter-culture Banská Štiavnica is the poster boy/girl for this large but largely overlooked region of Slovakia. There are rolling green mountains, there is the big and quite sophisticated city of Banská Bystrica, and there is the south – that flat, remote swathe of land filled by agricultural land, Hungarians and a fair few hidden culinary gems – all conspiring to convert fresh produce into eatable and drinkable treats.
